I read about them raising the level cap to 99 on IGN:

Not sure what to think of that.. It would really change a lot of sub job dynamics in the game. Then there are the merits. Do you keep them or lose them until you hit the level cap? Could one at level 99 solo most of the content currently in the game? Maybe SE thinks FFXI will die out when FXIV hits the stores, so they are going out with a big bang..

There will be advanced merits at 99 and they're not gonna strengthen the current NMs. They will release new mobs for higher levels.

I wonder how they are going to balance sub jobs and such. Imagine a Pld/Rdm with convert and all that other Rdm goodness.. Be a pretty sick tank I think. Others I'm sure..

I actually find it kind of funny that Pandemonium is merging with Asura, since when Team Maine and myself first started playing FFXI we were on the Asura server. We were only there for a month or so before we lost interest and quit, only to come back a few months later to Pandemonium with new characters, but still. Embrodak has been jittery like a crack fiend since he found out the level cap is being raised, but he's the only one. I just can't bring myself to reactivate my cat. Every time I do, I end up actually playing the game for a week or so, then it degenerates into me essentially paying to chat to people.
Right now I have Star Trek Online, and as buggy as it still is, I find it entertaining. I'm still torn between playing FFXIV and Star Wars: The Old Republic. I know FFXIV comes out first, so I know I'll play it til SWTOR comes out, but after that I'm just not sure.

I had a lot of fun when I came back to FFXI. It was nice seeing old friends and checking out some of the new things that were added to the game. I enjoyed raising my Chocobos, soloing on Dragoon with my NPC and running my semi legal Grass to Gil Gardening scheme. I really got into doing Campaign and was able to cap my XP and shield merits! I'd probably still be playing FFXI now, but school got really busy for me. Its so hard finding time for an MMO when one has to balance a full time job, a physics major, Jujitsu, and having some kind of social life.
But I do miss FFXI. I still have the game installed on my PC. Maybe I will have time in the summer depending on how busy my summer class schedule is and of course my employment status. Cant forget that.

Wow, 99???!
At 99, you should be able to solo Sky mobs and most current HNMs, take down AV with a party of 6, and pretty much cakewalk through any part of the game as we know it.
For me, I'm back to playing WoW with my cousin. Having a good time for once because I am leveling with someone else instead of by myself, but still I have no addiction to the game. FFXIV and Diablo III: I'm patiently awaiting your arrival.

99 will be crazy, I'm surprised they would even think about doing this considering the tons of work it would take, unless of course it is just a big finale.
